Behind every ride: the volunteers shaping Québec’s mountain bike trails

As the season gradually opens, mountain bike trails in Québec come back to life — attracting riders from near and far.

But before the first tires hit the dirt, there’s a story most visitors don’t see: the dedication of volunteers who make the riding experience possible.

Preparing world-class trails for the season

Each spring, an extensive amount of work is required to bring the trail network back to life after winter.
From clearing leaves and debris to restoring drainage systems, repairing sections, and reshaping trail surfaces, every detail matters. This work ensures that riders can enjoy safe, high-quality, and memorable trail conditions from day one.

9,000 hours of volunteer impact

In an article published on May 22, 2026, Le Journal de Québec recognized the vital contribution of volunteers across the region.
Among them, Sentiers du Moulin (SDM) stands out as one of the most active trail networks, with nearly 9,000 volunteer hours invested in a single year — representing over $200,000 in value dedicated to trail maintenance and development.

A community-driven trail network

At Sentiers du Moulin, community is at the heart of everything we do.
Since the early days of mountain biking, volunteers have played a key role in shaping and sustaining the network. Groups like DigSDM, LB-Cycle, along with passionate riders and supporters, contribute directly to the trails visitors enjoy today.

From invisible work to unforgettable experiences

Much of this work happens behind the scenes, yet its impact is felt on every ride.
It allows us to:
  • open trails earlier in the season
  • maintain consistent quality across the network
  • support our trail crew
  • develop new sections and experiences
  • ensure long-term trail sustainability

A shared experience

For riders visiting from outside Québec, this means more than just great trails — it means being part of a place shaped by passion, care, and community.
🙏 To every volunteer: thank you for helping create trails that are not only rideable, but truly unforgettable.
